Hello Minty, looking at your choice of potatoes there. As mainstream choice they look fine - but I don't think I would give ground space to Maris Piper. They are the cheapest potatoes you can buy in the supermarket. They give great big crops with nothing else to recommend them. But I'm with your excitement. Hope your potatoes are great.

I don't really know what I'm talking about but I thought B&Q had a decent choice of different types for a place that isn't a 'real' garden centre. I think there were about ten varieties but nothing that stood out as unusual. I didn't see any of the ones you mentioned.
I have to confess to also placing quite a substantial order with the lovely Mr Romans for some heritage and harder to find tubersI was feeling part of the scenery

Couldn`t resist some pink fir apple from Wyvale this morning.
As they are a lot smaller than most other seed potatoes(50 from my 2k bag) do you plant them the same distance apart ??. Also anyone any idea how well these type crop. Thanks Minty X" If it tastes like chicken THEN EAT CHICKEN " :- Kermit The Frog

I don't really know Minty but I've ordered some Pink Fir Apples (along with a few others ) from Alan Romans and there's no mention in his book or on the website about different planting.
Also found Roseval at the Co-Op today (rare in the UK, apparantly?) so I'm going to try a couple of those in tubs.I was feeling part of the scenery

I've grown Roseval in the past Seahorse. A nice spud - I keep finding them growing up as volunteers even though it's about 5 years since they were 'deliberate'. Because of the colour it's far easier to miss them in my soil than a pale potato.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
